"You ever watch the news? It ain’t an easy viewing party. 7 o’clock can make the world
feel like an awfully dark place:
War.
Murder.
Disease.
Ice storm vortexes.
Tropical storm vortexes.
Dirty politicians.
Dirty criminals.
School lunches.
.... I’m going to predict that the dark side of humanity is not going away any time soon.
So, the question becomes, what do we do with this evil? If it’s here to stay, what is the most productive way of dealing with it? Because many of us turn the other cheek. We go about our day in a relatively happy state, blissfully ignoring the atrocities of life. But what if there’s a better solution?
• What if we had some fun with evil?
• What if we mined evil for its energy and used that as fuel?
• What if we were able to transform evil into something awesome?
Perhaps pulling the wool over our eyes isn’t the best solution. Perhaps the trick to successful living is to turn negativity into progress. Day by day. Hour by hour. Minute by minute...
• Where there is difficulty, there is opportunity. • Where there is conflict, there is energy.
• Where there is evil, there is power.
Yea, I like that. Our task is not to avoid evil. Our task it to take evil and turn it into something awesome."

And that is exactly what my new workout is all about; hacking evil; exploiting the strength and power of renowned super villians to create a heavy, paramount force of good. Essentially training a superhero like a super villian.
My last check-in about my workout was whilst I was doing Mark Coles' M10 8-week physique. It was basically a prep-style regime... and it was torture! At first it was great - it made me love lifting weights again (the program is weight-lifting based with occasional HIIT training sessions involving sprints). Don't get me wrong, my body changed a great deal! My muscles developed a heck of a lot and I leaned down, but towards the end I got sick of just lifting weights. I felt tight and immobile. I could lift heavier than before but get me to do any calisthenics, agility based movements, or even a little bit of extra cardio, and I was a mess. I consumed rice, meat, eggs, veg and protein powder every single day. The first week or two was OK. Then as the days went on I wanted to dunk my face in doughnuts, bathe in chocolate and cookies, and sleep in a bed of pizzas and burgers. By the end of the program my macro intake was so low; for instance, my fat intake was 20g (which, by the way, is near impossible to stick too as fat is in most things...and is by all means extremely low...) I was moody, tired and running on nothing. When I lifted it felt like driving a car with no petrol in it's tank.
Yet, amongst some of the negativity, it taught me a lot and it's completely changed my approach to nutrition. Now, I flex my diet up where I want - I don't feel guilty - I don't eat 'junk' all the time but I do in balance - I'm not worried about carbs - in fact, in turns out my body can tolerate quite a big amount and still lean (WINNING) and I eat to train effectively and to be healthy - not to be skinny.
Last month I started a new program. It's totally fricken awesome. It's bought the fun back into training and more importantly it doesn't include depriving my body or include copious amounts of boring-sucky cardio.
It's called Super Villain training by Rob Bandana; writer, coach, trainer, sports nutritionist and athlete... One of the board advisers for Arnie, the Greatist... and if that doesn't impress you, just check out his hefty qualifications list.
The program is split into four meso phases which are personifications of 4 savage, badass, magnificent super villains;
Magneto: workouts formed around the German Body Comp energy system training.
Venom; sets of wicked weightlifting complexes.
Bane; volume training to result in monstrous hypertrophy
and finally, the Shredder; the all round fat burning final phase.
So far it's really fun and challenging. I love the concept of it - it's almost turned training into some sort of XBOX game mission. The only thing at the moment is that I want the workouts to last longer than 3 weeks!
I will try and post again soon to keep you updated.
